Stepping into the world of baking has always been a passion of mine, but nothing could have prepared me for the incredible experience of my first baking retreat in Birmingham, Alabama.
Hosted by Bake From Scratch Magazine and the talented Erin Jean McDowell, this retreat promised to be an immersive journey into the art of baking—and it certainly did not disappoint.
A Warm Welcome in Birmingham
Arriving at the retreat, I was immediately struck by the warm Southern charm of Birmingham, as well as the green and lush trees and plants – a much needed change from the too dry and too hot Northern California! We first gathered at Valley Hotel for glass of wine, and it was immediately clear we were going to have a fun weekend!
The next morning, we were driven over to the “Hoffice” – Hoffman Media’s Test Kitchen and gorgeous offices – where the magic happens, a beautifully restored space filled with light and laughter, which set the perfect tone for our culinary adventure. As I walked in, I was greeted by Brooke M. Belle, Brian Hart Hoffman, and Erin McDowell, as well as the friendly Bake From Scratch team. Their enthusiasm was contagious, and I instantly felt like part of a community that shared my love for baking.
Learning and Inspiration
The retreat kicked off with hands-on workshops led by Erin Jean McDowell herself, whose expertise in pastry crafting is legendary. From mastering the art of her flaky pie crusts to exploring fall-inspired recipes from the Bake From Scratch team, we soaked in every bit of knowledge they shared. Under Erin’s guidance, we learned the intricacies of dough handling, the nuances of par baking and blind baking, and the secrets behind achieving that perfect “sturdy pie” which we were told we would master by the end of the retreat. Each session was not just a lesson in baking but a testament to the creativity and precision that defines the craft.
A Feast for the Senses
Beyond the flour-dusted countertops and the aroma of freshly made Apple Pecan Caramel Bundt, Deep Fried Apple Hand Pies, Spiced Sweet Potato Cake with Swiss Meringue, and a Pumpkin Sugar Pie, the retreat offered a feast for the senses. We all savored every moment of our communal lunch time, where conversations flowed as easily as the coffee, diet coke, and mimosas. Shared meals became a highlight, where newfound friends exchanged stories and laughter over made-from-scratch biscuits by Brian, fresh Mediterranean plate of chicken, hummus and vegetables, as well as a delicious and hearty Fall Soup, served with fresh and warm grilled cheese sandwiches. The atmosphere was as rich as the food and desserts themselves, fostering bonds that will linger long after the retreat’s conclusion.

Bringing Home Memories
As the retreat drew to a close, we all departed with more than just culinary skills—we’ve all carried home a trove of memories. Packed with boxes of carefully wrapped pies and cakes, and my heart brimming with newfound inspiration, I’m reflecting on a weekend well spent. The journey didn’t end at the retreat; it’s continuing in my kitchen, where I will keep recreating the magic of Erin’s teachings. And, I still can’t believe I have a new bag of her “Pie Beans”! From now on, each pie I bake will be a testament to our time together, a reminder of the warmth and camaraderie that defined the experience. She is an amazing instructor and makes everything so approachable and easy…and FUN!!

Along with Erin, I was finally able to meet IRL the team from Bake From Scratch that I’ve been baking with online through Baking School with Williams Sonoma + Bake from Scratch for their live baking workshops featuring a deep-dive into each month’s recipe…what a JOY they are, and I am so thrilled to have spent time with them. With their sweet southern drawl, they share their love of baking as well as their expertise, and I am energized by their intention to make the world a better place with a community of happy bakers! They want everyone to be the best they can be, which resonates with me and my ‘why’!

Looking Ahead
The Fall Baking Retreat with Erin Jean McDowell was more than a culinary event; it was a celebration of community and creativity. As I’ve returned to my daily life, I’ve done so with a renewed passion for baking and a deeper appreciation for the artistry behind a well-crafted pie. For many, the retreat served as a reminder of the simple joys found in sharing good food and creating lasting memories. As I eagerly await future gatherings and new culinary adventures, one thing remains certain: the spirit of the retreat will continue to inspire me in my kitchen as well as in my heart for seasons to come.
Erin’s Cookbooks are some of my favorites, and The Book on Pie is my go-to resource for all things PIE!
In essence, the Fall Baking Retreat in Birmingham, Alabama, was not just about baking —it was about savoring the moments, forging connections, and embracing the warmth of the fall season through the joy of baking.
