Must-Have Kitchen Gadgets for Baking

July 16, 2024

As a home baker, I’ve found that having the right tools can make all the difference. Over the years, I’ve tried countless gadgets and found a few that I simply can’t live without. Here’s a rundown of my favorite kitchen gadgets that make baking not just easier, but also a lot more fun!

Amazon Links provided for reference, as an associate I earn from qualified purchases.

1. Stand Mixer

A good stand mixer is the cornerstone of any baking operation. It saves time and effort, especially when making large batches of dough or batter. I love my KitchenAid Artisan Series mixer—it’s powerful, durable, and comes with various attachments that handle everything from whipping cream to kneading bread dough. It’s been a work horse for almost 6 years, and I have no complaints. Be sure and get an extra stainless steel mixing bowl for it, as well as a flex-edge paddle attachment.

2. Digital Kitchen Scale

Accuracy is crucial in baking, and a digital kitchen scale ensures that I measure ingredients precisely. Unlike measuring cups, a scale gives exact weight, eliminating guesswork and ensuring consistency in my baked goods. I have tried a few different digital scales, but the one that has been consistant and seems to always be correct is My Weigh KD-8000 and for smaller amounts, I invested in a gram scale , too.

3. Silicone Baking Mats

Silicone baking mats have been a game-changer in my kitchen. They provide a non-stick surface, reducing the need for parchment paper and making cleanup a breeze. Plus, they distribute heat evenly, which helps cookies and pastries bake perfectly. I have silicone mats of various sizes, as well as my newest favorites the perferated silicone mats for choux pastry. Game changer!

4. Offset Spatula

An offset spatula is indispensable for frosting cakes and cupcakes. Its angled design allows me to spread icing smoothly and evenly without my hand getting in the way. It’s also great for lifting delicate cookies off the baking sheet. I love the Ateco 3-piece set for versatility.

I use a bench scraper for everything from cutting dough to cleaning flour off my countertops. It’s a simple tool, but incredibly versatile and handy, especially when working with bread dough.

6. Pastry Blender

For making pie crusts and scones, a pastry blender is a must. It cuts cold butter into flour effortlessly, creating the perfect crumbly texture for flaky pastries. It’s much easier and quicker than using two knives or your fingers.

7. Rolling Pin with Thickness Guides

A large, straight edge rolling pin with dough guides ensure that my dough is rolled out evenly every time. This is especially important for cookies and pie crusts where uniform thickness can make or break the final product. I also use a very large silicone mat for rolling out dough for easy clean up.

8. Piping Bags and Tips

For decorating cakes, cupcakes, and cookies, I rely on a good set of piping bags and tips. They allow for endless creativity, whether I’m piping intricate designs or simple swirls of frosting. Start with the basics, and then keep adding to your collection with larger and more unique tips.

9. Instant Read Thermometer

Another game changer is an instant read thermometer. I’ve tried a few different, but my favorite and the most consistant and accurate is the ThermoPro. And, many ovens don’t maintain the exact temperature they’re set to, which can be problematic for precise baking. An oven thermometer helps me monitor the actual temperature inside the oven, ensuring my baked goods turn out just right.

10. Glass Cannisters with Labels, Glass Prep Bowls

One of the first changes I did was purchase airtight glass cannisters and labels. Mostly because it keeps everything fresh, but also because they’re CUTE!! As well as new stacking spice racks. Cute and functional. And, lastly lots and lots of glass prep bowls for “mise en place”. Accurate measurments means better results.

Conclusion

These are just a few of the gadgets that have become staples in my kitchen, and I can’t imagine baking without them. Whether you’re a seasoned baker or just starting, investing in these tools will make your baking process smoother and more enjoyable. And remember, you don’t need everything all at once. It took me years to figure out what I really needed and bought everything little by little. But, they all have made baking a little less stressful and more enjoyable, especially with the better results!!

Happy baking!
